At the end, the audience voted on the question of whether bodybuilders look fabulous - and the answer was no.  Some laughs along the way, though…

Surprisingly, this references the Higgs Boson. British comedy sets the intellectual bar high, even when it’s brow is aimed quite low…

A weekend in the country

On Sunday, Sue drove us down to the country, arriving at 1 pm.

I had an idyllic day in the sun and scudding cloud, reading my Edmund Crispin (Frequent Hearses - very good), having tea on the terrace and in the conservatory, having a good lunch, walking with the whole family down Wood Lane and to the Manor tea room for cake and tea as pudding (Sue’s idea), wandering around the churchyard and church - heavens, what a lot of officers from the army, navy and Air Force are there, and a smattering of knights with names not at all associated with the big houses - lighting an evening fire, having supper, even watching a little Cranford with Sue.

There was only one shock, which was not a wholly bad thing although in retrospect I think I misjudged it - and that was that I let the kids watch Blackadder (which they adore, and have been watching greedily for weeks now on the DVD set I bought them) through to the end of the First World War episode.

I knew that they all die in this, and that it is moving, but I was not prepared by the terrific shock of this after all the laughter, and the narrow escapes which he always manages in other episodes, which makes the unexpected impact of the conclusion even more severe.  But it is good - it is as if the writers are saying “Actually, there are no jokes here.  Everyone dies.  It is a great English tragedy and the laughing stops.”  Henry was very upset and so was Richard, tears from both, and I, too, had a lump in my throat and watery eyes, but Meg, who is always a cool customer, was quite unaffected.

I spent bath and bedtime putting them back together again, which I eventually achieved by reading them Piggyboo has a bath - which is beyond parody, and got us all laughing again.
